Private David Hope

Private David Hope, 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France, aged 25,  on 23rd April 1917 during the Battle of Arras and is buried in Bootham Cemetery, Heniel, France. He had been born in Sprouston in 1892 and was the son of David and Margaret Hope of Smailhom Mains and the husband of Euphemia Hope of Hill House, Oxton. Before enlisting in June 1916 in the K.O.S.B. he was employed as a ploughman at Hill House, Oxton. He was posted to the 7th/8th K.O.S.B. in France before being transferred to the R.S.F. The Battalion was engaged with the rest of the 30th Division in an attack on the high ground overlooking Cherisy in the Sensee valley. The attack failed and the Battalion suffered 50% casualties with 6 Officers and 55 Other Ranks killed and 4 Officers and 195 Other Ranks wounded. 4 Officers and 209 Other Ranks were posted missing.He fell in the same action as Adam Renwick above ).The photographs show British troops during the Battle.
