Lance Corporal Bateman Leeming

Lance Corporal Bateman William Leeming, 9th ( Service ) Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in France on 18th May 1916 aged 23. He was the son of John and Jemima Leeming of Parkfoot, Oxton and is buried in Sailly-Labourse Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.  He was accidentally killed by being run over by a motor lorry on his way up to the front line. Before the war he had assisted his father who was a mole catcher and rabbit trapper in the district  and had been the best shot in the Oxton Minature Rifle Club. He had enlisted in October 1914 and had already been wounded in the Battle of Loos. His Headstone is inscribed ” He Hath Done What He Could “.
