Private Andrew Anderson

Private, Andrew, Alexander Anderson, Kings Own Scottish Borderers attached to No.3 Commando. He was killed in action in France on 19th August 1942 during the Dieppe Raid, aged 22. He had been born in Stow and was the son of Andrew and Euphemia Anderson of Headshaw, Oxton. He is buried in Abbeyville Communal Cemetery Extension, France where his headstone is inscribed ” Greater Love Hath No Man Than This, That A Man Lay Down His Life For his Friends. He had originally enlisted in the K.O.S.B. and had volunteered for the Commandos. With them he had already taken part in the successful raid on Vasago in Norway in December 1941. At Dieppe No. 3 Commando was given the task of silencing the German coastal guns at Berneval so as to protect the main landing. The commando landings were not altogether successful and the guns were not destroyed. However enough commandos made it ashore and their sniping kept the Germans from targeting Allied Shipping.
