Flying Officer Robert Bruce

Flying Officer Robert Simpson Bruce, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.  He was a pilot with 184 Squadron R.A.F. and died on Service in Germany on 28th May 1945, aged 20. He had been born in Teviothead andwas the son of James and Mary Bruce of  Riccalton, Oxnam. He is buried in Hanover War Cemetery, Hanover, Germany where his Headstone is inscribed ” God Is Love “. The Squadron flew the Hawker Typhoon 1B fighter-bomber and claimed to be the first Squadron to be based on German soil when it moved there on 21st March 1945. After the War ended the Squadron was based at Schleswig near the Danish border. His aircraft suffered engine failure  and he was killed in the subsequent forced landing.
