Private James Smith

Private James Smith, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died at Gallipoli, aged 22, on 13th July 1915 of wounds suffered during the ” Charge ” on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah on 12th July. He Had been born in Ashkirk and was the son of Henry and the late Esther Smith of Upper Samieston farm, Oxnam. He is buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. Before enlisting he had been employed as a shepherd.  His brother George also fell ( see above ). The first photo shows Achi Baba, the ultimate objective, marked with a cross. This “hill” dominated the battlefield and was never captured. The second shows the Borderers attacking at Gallipoli and the third shows the battlefield in 1922.
