Private James Porteous

Private James Porteous, 5th ( Service ) Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. He died from wounds in Belgium on 26th October 1918, aged 32, during the ” Advance to Victory”. He is buried in Vichte Military Cemetery, Belgium where his Headstone is inscribed ” Simply To Thy Cross I Cling”. He was the son of the late Robert Porteous of Newtown St. Boswells, Roxburghshire. He was wounded during the capture of Vichte by the 9th ( Scottish ) Division on the 22nd October 1918. He had joined the 1st Battalion in France in December 1914 and at some point he was transferred to the 5th Battalion. The photographs show Allied troops advancing after the retreating German Army.
