Private Edward Lawrence Mathers

Private Edward Lawrence Mathers, 9th ( Service ) Battalion, Cameronians. He died in France, aged 19, on 8th August, 1918 . He is buried in Vendresse British Cemetery, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” How Bright These Glorious Spirits Shine “. He was the son of George and Annie Barclay Mathers of 3 Plainfield Terrace, Newtown St. Boswells, Roxburghshire. This cemetery was made after the Armistice by a concentration of graves from other parts of the battlefields. He had been captured at Kemmel during the German Spring offensive on the River Lys and died in a German P.O.W. camp. ( Edward’s eldest brother George became a Member of Parliament until 1950 and was raised to the peerage as Baron Mathers in 1952 ).
