Private John Hunter

Private John Hunter, 6th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died of wounds in England on 20th November 1940, aged 23, suffered as a result of an air raid. He was the son of James and Agnes Hunter of Newtown St. Boswells and the husband of Wilhelmina Hunter of Galashiels. He is buried in Melrose ( Wairds ) Cemetery. Before enlisting he had been employed by Hall & Sons of Newton St. Boswells. At that time the German Blitz on London was in full swing and the Battalion were in billets in a pleasure park at Theydon Bois on the Essex border of London. On 18th November two platoon billts of ” A” Coy. were struck by a landmine dropped by a German raider. 30 Men were killed or died of wounds and another 30 were wounded.
