Private David Shanks

Private David Wilson Shanks, 6th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died in England, aged 19, on 18th November 1940. He was the son of Alexander and Nellie Shanks of Newtown St. Boswells and is buried in Bowden New Cemetery  where his Headstone is inscribed ” In Loving Memory Of Our Only Son. He Gave His Life That We May Live”.  He had joined the Territorials in April in 1939 and was employed by the L.N.E.R. at St. Boswells Station. At that time the German Blitz on London was in full swing.  The Battalion were in billets at a pleasure park at Theydon Bois, Essex on that night and two platoon billets of “A” Coy were hit by a land mine. 30 men were killed and another 30 wounded.
