Private George Gordon

Private George Andrew Gordon, 10th ( Service ) Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 35, on 20th October, 1917 during the Battle of Third Ypres and is buried in the Minty Farm Cemetery. He had been born in Melrose and was the son of James and Euphemia Gordon of Dingleton, Melrose. He was the husband of  Mrs. J. F. Gordon of Whittey Bank, Castle Road, Auchterarder, Perthshire. He had been employed as a postman in Melrose before becoming a postman in Auchterarder. He had originally enlisted in the 2nd/4th K.O.S.B. before transferring to the 2nd ( Garrison ) Bat5talion, Royal Scots and from there to the Argylls in December 1916. The photos show the atrocious condition of the Flanders battlefield where the incessant shelling had destroyed the fragile drainage systems.
