Private Forbes Millar

Private Forbes Millar, 7/8th ( Service ) Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers, He was killed in action on 23rd July 1918 aged 30 and is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, France. He had been born in Leith and was the only son of John Forbes Millar and Helen Millar of Hawthornsyde Cottages, Newstead, Melrose, Roxburghshire.  He fell in the attack through the open ground between Rosieres and Buzancy. The Cameronians were on the left and the French 87th Division on the right. The barrage however failed and the Battalion gained only 200 yards which was further than anybody else. Casualties were heavy for this meagre gain.  4 Officers and 95 Other Ranks were killed or missing and 7 Officers and 214 Other Ranks were wounded.
