Private Andrew Inglis

Private Andrew William Inglis, 105th Battery, Machine Gun Corps. He died in the 4th General Hospital in France, aged 21, on 12th November 1917 of wounds received in action during the Third Battle of Ypres. He had been born in Nenthorn and was the son of the late James and Mary Inglis of Newton Don, Kelso and is buried in Etaples Military, Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” Thy Will Be Done “.  He had been employed on the Newton Don Estate , Nenthorn before becoming a gamekeeper on the Marchmont Estate, Greenlaw.  He had originally enlisted in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders  but was posted to the M.G.C . in France. The M.G.C. used the Vickers Mk1 water cooled gun in both defensive and offensive roles and the photograph shows machine gunners in position.
