Private George Halliday

Private George Halliday, 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers. He was killed in France on 13th April 1917 during the Battle of Arras, aged 37, and is buried in Tank Cemetery, Guemappe, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” Rest In Peace “. He was the son of William and Elizabeth Halliday, had been born in Morebattle and was the husband of Janet Renton Halliday of High Street, Lauder. Before enlisting in the Royal Engineers he had worked as a mason in Lauder. He was later transferred into the South Wales Borderers. He is also on the Lauder War Memorial and listed as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers. The photographs show British troops accompanied by a tank in the main street of a captured village near Arras.
