Private George Weir

Private George Weir, 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.  He died in France in the 43rd Casualty Clearing Station on 5th November 1916 of wounds received in action on 31st October during the last days of the Battle of the Somme, aged 38. He was the son of George Weir of Rutherford House, Yetholm, Kelso. He had been born in Morebattle and had lived there before enlisting in Berwick-upon-Tweed.  He had been employed as the Farm Steward at Woodside, Yetholm before enlisting in July 1916 and is buried in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty, Pas de Calais, France.  He had originally enlisted in the 7th/8th K.O.S.B. but in France was transferred to the R.S.F. His Headstone is inscribed ” Until The Day Break And The Shadows Flee Away “. ( The Memorial has his regiment as the Kings Own Scottish Borderers but after reaching France he was transferred into the 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers ). The autumnal rains had turned the ground into a glutinous quagmire making all movement very difficult as can be seen from the photographs.
