Private James Grant

Private James Wood Grant, 29th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps. He died from wounds in the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station in France on 5th September 1918, aged 19, during the ” Advance to Victory ” He was the son of Robert and Isabella Grant of Maxton and is buried in La Kreule Military Cemetery, Hazebrouk, Nord, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” Greater Love Hath No Man Than This “. He had originally enlisted in the Cameronians but was posted to the M.G.C. in France. His brother Thomas also fell ( see above for details ). The M.G.C used the Vickers Ml1 water cooled gun and was used in both defensive and offensive roles. The photographs show gunners taking a break and Allied troops advancing against the retreating German army during the final 100 days of the War.
