Private William Galloway

Private William Alexander Galloway, 46th Battalion ( South Saskatchewan ), Canadian Infantry. He died in France on 29th April 1917, aged 38, of wounds received in action during the Battle of Arras and is buried in Bruay Communal Cemetery Extension, near Bethune, France.  His Headstone is inscribed ” The Eternal God Is Thy Refuge And Underneath Are The Everlasting Arms “. He was the son of Frederick and Jessie Galloway of the Schoolhouse Makerstoun and had been born at Pleasants Schoolhouse, Jedburgh. Before emigrating to Canada he had served for five years with the Border Rifle Volunteers and had served his apprentice as a law clerk in Kelso. In Canada he was in farming in Saskatchewan  before enlisting in June 1916. This Battalion fought in all the major Canadian Corps actions and because of its high casualty rate it was known as the ” Suicide Battalion “. The photographs show Canadians at Arras.
