Private Joseph Quarry

Private Joseph Morrison Quarry, Royal Army Medical Corps. He died on Active Service on Malta on 6th September 1915, aged 19. He was the son of George and Charlotte Quarry of Orchardmains, Innerleithen and was a native of Makerstoun, Kelso. He is buried in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta. Before enlisting he had been employed as a forester. He had been on duty in the Salonika Campaign when he contracted dysentery and died in a military hospital in Malta. His personal effects of a New Testament, a Gospel of St Luke, two pipes, 1 £1, three photos, a torch. a cigarette case and a razor strop were returned to his father.  His father complained that some valuable items were missing and pilfering must have taken place in the hospital.
