Private John Hogarth

Private John A. Hogarth, 12th ( Service )Battalion, Highland Light Infantry ( City of Glasgow Regiment ). He was killed in action in France on 9th April 1917, aged, 26, on the opening day of the Battle of Arras. He was the son of Andrew and Isobel Hogarth of Makerstoun, Kelso and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France.  Before enlisting he had been employed as a ploughman at Manorhill farm, Makerstoun. He had originally enlisted in the K.O.S.B. but had been transferred to the H.L.I. in France. This action was known as the first Battle of the Scarpe. The photos show troops during the Battle.
