Private James Young

Private James Young, 10th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 4th April 1918 during the German Spring Offensive  aged 19. He was the son of Mrs Jane Young and is buried in Bienvilliers Military Cemetery, near Arras, France. The Battalion was part of the 97th Brigade in the 32nd Division. He had been born in Greenlaw and was the son of Jane and the late Thomas of Greatridge Hall, Makerstoun. He had enlisted in November 1914 and went to France where it was discovered he was well underage (15) and sent back to the U.K. Eventually this plucky young lad was allowed back when he reached 18 and went to France. The photographs show Allied troops in rather makeshift defensive positions preparing to resist the advancing Germans.
