Lieutenant Ivor Maitland

Lieutenant Ivor Colin James The Viscount Maitland, 2nd Lothian and Border Horse, Royal Armoured Corps. He was killed in action in Tunisia on 18th January 1943, aged 27, during the Battle of Bou Arada. He was the son of Major I.C. Maitland, 15th Earl of Lauderdale and the Countess of Lauder ( nee Bell Irving ). He was the husband of Viscountess Maitland ( nee Perrot ) of Thirlestone Castle, Lauder and 9 Sloan Court, London and is buried in Massicault War Cemetery, Tunisia. He had been educated at Stowe School, Buckinghamshire where he served in the O,T,C. He was commissioned in August 1939. His Regiment operated the Sherman Tank. He is commemorated on a Memorial Plaque in Lauder Old Parish Church placed there by his family which is inscribed ” In Africa Far From His Native Land He Lies Beneath the Desert’s Burning Sand. His Lot Was With The Dawn Of Life To Die In Battle At the Dawn Of Victory”.
