Private George Yeaman

Private George Thompson Yeaman, 1st/7th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He died of wounds in hospital in Amiens on 10th February 1917, aged 21.  He was the son of Walter and Margaret Yeaman of Longhirst and is buried in St Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, Somme, France. The Battalion had been in Front line trenches near Mametz Wood on the Somme from 15th-19th January and had suffered 5 Other Ranks killed and 10 wounded during that period mostly from shellfire. His Headstone is inscribed ” Thy Will Be Done “. The photo shows the Memorial raised to the 50th ( Northumbrian ) Division of which the Battalion was part. It was erected near the village of Wieltje in the Ypres Salient near where the Division had fought its first action on 26th April 1915 only days after landing on the Continent.
