Stoker Robert Little

Stoker 1st Class Robert Little, Royal Navy, M.I.D. He was killed in action at sea on the 25th October 1943 aged 21. He had been born at Traquair and was the son of John and Annie Little of New Graden Estates, Linton. He is buried in Manor Parish Churchyard, Peeblesshire where his Headstone is inscribed ” A Loving Son A Brother Dear A Faithful Friend When He Was Here”. He had served aboard “Motor Gunboat 607”. On the 25th October 30 German E Boats had attacked a coastal convoy off Cromer, Norfolk. M.G.Bs 607 and 603 in return sank two of the German boats. Stoker Little was the Oerlikon gunner on 607 and despite both his loaders being wounded kept his gun in action until he fell. He was Mentioned in Despatches for his gallantry. (M.G.B.s were small high speed vessels heavily armed with a mix of guns, usually one or two 6 pounders forward, one 20mm Oerlikon and two twin Vickers machine guns on the bridge wings. The boats were capable of up to 40 knots and saw much action on the southern and eastern coasts of the U.K. often against the German E. Boats ).
