Private George Smith

Private George Smith, 5th ( Western Cavalry ) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action on 28th April, 1917, aged 29, during the Battle of Arras and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, France.  He had been born in Selkirk and was the son of John and Mary Smith of Catfraid, Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire. He had emigrated to Canada and was working as a store-keeper in Melville, Saskatchewan when he enlisted in January 1915. ( His Regiment was known as ” Tuxford’s Dandys” after its first Commander Lt. Col. George Tuxford ). The photos were taken during the Battle.
