Second Lieutenant Arthur Pollock Sym Borthwick

Second Lieutenant  Arthur Pollock Sym Borthwick, 58th Company, Machine Gun Corps. He died in France on 15th April 1918 during the German Offensive on the River Lys, aged 30, and is buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” Only Goodnight Beloved Not Farewell His Loving Wife”. He was the son of William and Agnes Borthwick of Ale View, Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire and the husband of Caroline Borthwick of 60 Bank Road, Bootle, Liverpool. He had been a policeman in Jedburgh, Coldstream and Liverpool before emigrating to Canada in 1914 where he served in the Ottawa Police Force. He enlisted in the Canadian Army and landed in France in September 1915. He was commissioned into the M.G.C in March 1917. The M.G.C used the Vickers Mk1 water cooled gun in both defensive and offensive roles. The photographs show gunners in a defensive role.
