Private Andrew McKinnon

Private Andrew McKinnon, 6th Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action, aged 23, on 3rd May, 1917 during the Battle of Arras and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. He had been born in Lillieleaf and was the son of Thomas and Helen McKinnon, of Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire. He fell in the disastrous action at ” Greenland Hill “. It was a night action over unreconnoitred ground and resulted in three companies being cut off by the Germans. Only some 50 men returned. 5 Officers and 51 Other Ranks were killed and 152 Other Ranks were wounded. In addition 5 Officers and 200 Other Ranks were posted missing.  In Great War parlance this usually meant killed although some may have been Prisoners of War.
