Rifleman Adam Wilson

Rifleman Adam Wilson, Rifle Brigade.  He was initially a member of the Army Service Corps but had been posted to the 28th Battalion, London Regiment, (Artists’ Rifles). He died in Germany, aged 21, on 5th April,1918 whilst a P.O.W. and is buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Hessen, Germany.  In 1915 the cemetery was begun by the Germans for prisoners of war who had died at the local P.O.W. camp. In 1922-23 it was decided that the graves of Commonwealth servicemen who had died all over Germany should be brought together into four permanent cemeteries. Niederzwehren was one those chosen and there are now 1796 First World War servicemen buried or commemorated there. He had been born in Gordon, Berwickshire and was the son of Alexander and Margaret Wilson of Newhouse, Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire and before enlisting in May 1915 he had been employed as a shepherd at Huntlaw farm, Lilliesleaf.
