Sergeant Thomas Scott

Sergeant Thomas Scott, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was a Flight Engineer with 9 Squadron, Royal Air Force and was lost on Air Operations over Germany on 1st January 1945 aged 19. He had been born in Castleton and was the son of William James and Francis Scott of Selkirk and is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany. His Headstone is inscribed ” He Gave His Life For Others”. 9 Squadron was a specialist heavy bombing squadron flying the Avro Lancaster 111 from R.A.F. Bardney, Lincolnshire. They had taken part on 12th November 1944 in the raid which had sunk the German Battleship “Tirpitz” which was anchored near Tromso, Norway using the 12,000 Tallboy bomb designed by Barnes Wallace. ( It is probable that Sergeant Scott took part in this very successful raid) He was lost on the attack on the Dortmund-Ems canal when his aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed.
