Private John Nicholson

Private John Nicholson,  4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Cameron Highlanders  att. 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. He was killed in action, aged 35, in France on 17th August 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He was the son of Thomas Nicholson of Doncaster Street, Newcastleton and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. He was employed as a railway shunter in Leith when he enlisted in January 1916 and had lived at 17 Westfield Street, Gorgie, Edinburgh and left a widow and 3 children. The photos show Scottish troops on the Somme.
