Private William Norris

Private William Norris, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. He was killed in action in France on 1st January 1915 and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France He had been born in Kirk Yetholm and was the son of John Norris and Margaret Frater of Linton, Roxburghshire and Lochside, Leitholm. He had enlisted in August 1914 and had joined the Battalion in France in November 1914. The extended family were based in the Yetholm area and made a living by working as labourers on neighbouring farms.  ( He is also commemorated on the Yetholm War Memorial ). He fell near Cuinchy in an attack on a German position known as the ” Railway Triangle “among some brickstacks. The position was captured but could not be held owing to enfilade fire from well sited German machine guns. 2 Officers were killed and a further 109 Other Ranks killed wounded and missing. German casualties were stated to be considerable. The photos show Scots Guards during the Winter of 1914-1915.
