Private William Holmes Fairgrieve

Private William Holmes Fairgrieve, 10th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed by a sniper in France on 31st August 1915, aged 30 years.  He had been born in Mordington and was the son of Mrs Helen Fairgrieve, Leitholm, and is buried in Vermelles British Cemetery France. He had emigrated to Canada but returned to Scotland to enlist and had been a popular member of the Leitholm United Free Church Choir. Before emigrating he had worked as a groom at Eccles and then served as a Regular soldier with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers for five years. He then trained as a joiner before emigrating in 1912.
