Private John Todd

Private John James Todd, 3rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment). He died of wounds in France, aged 24, on 6th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1. He had been born in Lauder and was the son of William and Isabella Todd of Trabroun, Lauder. He died in the 35th Stationary Casualty Clearing Station which was based in Doullens.  Before enlisting in Saskatchewan in April 1915 he had been employed in farming. The Canadians were very much involved in the Battle and the photograph shows a recently captured trench on the Somme with the chalk soil of the Region very evident.
