Lieutenant Ivor Maitland

Lieutenant Ivor Colin James, Viscount  Maitland, 2nd Lothian and Border Horse, Royal Armoured Corps. He was killed in action in Tunisia on 18th January 1943 during the Battle of Bou Arada, aged 27. He had been born Dublin and was the son of Major I.C.Maitland, 15th Earl of Lauderdale and the husband of Vicountess Maitland ( nee Perrot ) of Thirlestane Castle, Lauder. He had been educated at Stowe School and was a member of the O.T.C. He was commissioned into the R.A.C. in august 1939. He is buried in Massicault War Cemetery, Tunisia and his headstone is inscribed ” His Lot was with the Dawn of Life to Die; In Battle at the Dawn of Victory”. A plaque to his memory was placed in Lauder Old Parish Church. The Regiment was equipped with the 75mm gunned Sherman tank.
