Captain R. Egerton

Captain R. G. Egerton, Queens Own Corps of Guides. He died on the 20th November 1894 at Mardan in the Punjab, India, aged 30. He was buried there. The Guides were raised in India in 1846 and were used as a garrison unit at the key frontier post at Mardan on the North West Frontier. They were known as an elite unit and were the first ever unit to wear ” Khaki “. Unusually they were comprised of both cavalry and infantry and remained loyal during the Indian Mutiny as well as taking part in many fierce encounters on the frontier such as the Tirah and Chitral campaigns.
