Private Peter Purves

Private Peter Purves, 12th ( Service ) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action in France, aged 21, on the 24th April 1917 during the battle of Arras and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. He was born in Ladykirk and was the husband of Isabella Purves of Broomdykes, Edrom.  He  had originally enlisted  in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers in 1916  before later being transferred into the H.L.I. Before enlisting he had lived in Coldstream and worked as a ploughman at Ladykirk Shiels farm.. The photograph shows British troops accompanied by a tank in the main street of a captured village.
