Captain William Turner

Captain William Robert Ian Turner, 5th Royal Iniskilling Dragoons, Royal Armoured Corps. He was killed in action in North Africa on 1st September 1942, aged 21. He was the son of Capt. J.H.Turner, The Queen’s Bays ( 2nd Dragoon Guards ) and Enid Turner of Mindrum, Cornhill-on-Tweed and is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt. ( The C.W.G.C. site has his Unit as the 2nd Gloucestershire Hussars. The Iniskillings were in France in 1940 and did not see action again until the invasion of Europe in 1944 so his unit in the Desert must have been the Gloucestershire Hussars. It is probable he had been transferred into the Hussars). The Hussars used the Crusader medium tank and having been in action were in reserve when Captain Turner was killed by shellfire. The Unit War Diary has his rank as Lieutenant.
