Captain Geoffrey Culley

Captain Geoffrey Matthew Culley, 11th ( Service ) Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 15th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, aged 33. He was the son of Matthew and Eleanor Culley of Coupland Castle, Wooler, Northumberland and the husband of Elizabeth Francis Culley of Colscombe, Dorset. He is buried in Bulls Road Cemetery, Flers, Somme, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” Requiescat In Pace “. Flers was captured on 15th September 1916 so it is possible that Captain Culley fell during this action. There is a plaque to his memory in Kirknewton Church. He had been educated at Cheltenham and had served for some years in the Durham Militia. He went to the Front in Spring 1915 with the 9th Battalion, Cameronians where he was wounded in September 1915 at the Battle of Loos. After recovering he went back to the Front having been transferred into the Royal West Kents. The photos show troops on the Somme.
