Captain Beaumont Selby

Captain Beauchamp Henry Selby, 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was a Regular soldier and was killed in action in France on 20th September 1914 during the Battle of the Aisne, aged 31. He was the son of the late Beaumont Prideaux Selby of Pawston, Northumberland and is commemorated on the La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial. This memorial commemorates the 3749 Officers and men of the British Expeditionary Force who fell at the Battles of Mons, Le Cateau, The Marne and the Aisne and have no known grave. At the time the Battalion were holding trenches near Rouge Maison and he was shot by by a sniper hidden in nearby woods which the Battalion were clearing at the time. He never regained consciousness. Captain Selby was born on 4th June 1882 and was educated at Harrow and Sandhurst being commissioned into the Fusiliers in 1901. He had served on the Northwest Frontier and had seen action in the Mohmand campaign at Matta from 1897-1898. The photographs show British troops during the Battle.
