Private William Wilson

Private William Wilson, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards, He was killed in action, aged 23, in France on 27th September 1915 during the Battle of Loos and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Loos, France. He fell in the attack on Puits 14 Bis and the ” Keep ” which cost the Battalion heavily. Between 27th and 30th September casualties were 2 Officers missing and another 9 wounded. Other Rank casualties were 27 killed with 324 wounded. In addition 93 were posted missing. He had been born in Bunkle, Berwickshire and was the son of James and Isabella Wilson of Holefield, Kelso and had enlisted in Earlston in November 1914. Before enlisting he had worked as a shepherd and road surfaceman. He was one of those posted missing presumed killed. The photograph shows the village of Loos after capture and the artist’s nightmarish illustration shows an attack at Loos with the troops wearing their gas hoods.
