Lieutenant William Ewart

Lieutenant William Grieve Ewart, 14th Battalion,  (Fife and Forfar Yeomanry ), Black Watch. He was killed in action in France on 30th March 1918 during the German Spring Offensive, aged 34. He had been born in Edinburgh and was the son of James and Eliza Ewart of Cairnmount, Roxburgh and Littledene, Burntisland, Fife and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. He had been employed in Edinburgh as a stockbrokers clerk. At the outbreak of War he was in Argentina and returned home to enlist. He was commissioned in December 1915. The regiment was dismounted in 1916 and later in Palestine became the 14th ( Fife and Forfar Yeomanry ) Battalion, Black Watch. The photographs show Allied troops preparing to resist the on coming Germans.
