Private William Aitchison

Private William Aitchison, 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He died in Italy on 13th July 1918 of wounds received in action against the Austrians, aged 23. He was the son of John and Catherine Aitchison of Blakelaw, Kelso and is buried in Montecchio Precalcino Communal Cemetery Extension. At that time the Battalion were in action on the Assiago Plateau assisting the Italians against the Austrians and suffered 40 casualties in July mostly from the Austrian artillery. The Battalion were part of the 7th Division who had been sent with other Divisions to prop up the Italians who had suffered a disastrous defeat the previous year and were in danger of collapse.
