Private Walter Stavert

Private Walter Stavert, 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France, aged 30, on 30th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. He was the son of Mrs Agnes and the late Thomas  Stavert of 20 Woodmarket, Kelso. He had been employed as a labourer in Kelso before enlisting in November 1915. He had originally enlisted in the K.O.S.B. but had been transferred to the 2nd R.S.F. in France. He fell in the fierce fighting in the Trones Wood are which cost the Battalion very heavily. 20 Officers and 750 Other Ranks went into action and casualties amounted to 633 in killed wounded and missing. Only 3 Officers and 140 Other Ranks remained. The photographs show Scots troops during the Battle and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today with no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”
