Chief Stoker Walter Patterson

Chief Stoker Walter Patterson, Royal Navy. He was lost at sea aboard H.M.S. “Stronghold” near Java on 2nd March 1942, aged 35. He was the son of Henry and Helen Patterson and the husband of Evelyn Patterson of Eastney Hampshire and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. H.M.S. “Stronghold” was an Admiralty Class “S” destroyer  built at Scotts of Greenock in 1919 and weighed 1,075 tons. She was sunk by a Japanese task force  in the South Java Sea on her way to Australia. Of her complement of 90 there were 50 survivors.
