Private Walter Halliday

Private Walter Harriot Halliday, 53rd Battalion, Maxchine Gun Corps ( Infantry ). He was killed in action in Belgium on 22nd October 1917, aged 30 during the Battle of Third Ypres and is buried in Cement House Cemetery, Langemark, Flanders, Belgium. He was the son of the late Robert and Margaret Halliday ex Swinton Quarter farm, Berwickshire and the husband of the late Isabella Renwick Halliday. He had enlisted in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in November 1914 but was transferred  when all the Battalion machine gun sections were amalgamated in to the M’G.C. The M.G.C used the Vickers Mk1 water cooled gun in both defensive and offensive roles. The other photos show the dire condition of the Flanders battlefield where the incessant shelling had destroyed the drainage systems. His Headstone is inscribed ” God Is Love “.
