Private Thomas Watson

Private Thomas Watson, 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action in France, aged 23, on 18th August, 1916 during the battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial. He was the son of Isabella and the late George Watson of 126 Roxburgh Street, Kelso. He fell in an attack near the village of Guillemont which was not wholly successful but did result in the capture of  the German front line trenches on the Hardecourt-Guillemonrt road. The cost was 4 Officers killed and 3 wounded with 257 Other Ranks killed wounded or missing. His two brothers James and Robert also fell – see above. The photographs show Scottish troops on the Somme and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today.
