Lance Corporal Simon Dalgleish

Lance Corporal Simon Dalgleish, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Palestine on 13th November 1917, aged 30. He was the son of James and Jane Dalgleish of Huntly Wood, Earlston, Berwickshire and is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Ramleh, Israel. He had been born in Ednam and was the son of James and Jane Dalgleish of Rumbletonlaw, Greenlaw. He had been living in Kelso when he enlisted.  He fell in the Judean Hills in the successful attack on Turkish positions at El Mughar where after fierce hand to hand fighting hundreds of prisoners were captured together with some machine guns and artillery pieces. Casualties were 6 Officers and 31 Other Ranks were killed and 9 Officers and 138 Other Ranks were wounded. The photos show Borderers at Ramleh in late 1917.
