Private Percival Jackson

Private Percival Harold Jackson, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action, aged 23, at Gallipoli on the 12th July 1915 during the ” Charge” on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah.. He had been born in Wakefield, Yorkshire but the family had moved to Kelso in 1911. He was the son of William and Ann Jackson of Grove Hill, Kelso and the husband of Mary Jackson of 23 Cross Street, Kelso. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been employed as a vanman with the Kelso Laundry Co. and was also a member of the K.O.S.B. Territorials being mobilised in August 1914. 12th July became known as the ” Black Day of the Borders” as only 70 unwounded men answered evening roll call out of the over 700 Officers and Other Ranks who had begun the attack. Few Border towns and villages had not lost at least one of their sons that fateful day. The first photo shows Achi Baba marked with a cross. This “hill” dominated the Battlefield and was never captured. The second shows the Borderers ” going over the top” at Gallipoli.
