Corporal Mark Tait M.M.and Bar

Corporal Mark Tait, M.M. and Bar, “Y ” Coy.,18th Medium Trench Mortar Battery, Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action in France on 21st March 1918, aged 26, on the first day of the German March Offensive ( Operation Michael )and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Pozieres, France. He was the son of James and Annie Tait of 5 Lillie’s Place, Kelso and the husband of Mary Ann  Brannan ( formerly Tait ). He was born in Jedburgh in 1892 but was living Kelso when he enlisted in 1914.  Besides his widow he left a son who was born in 1918. (The Register of Military Medal winners lists his rank as Bombardier ). He was awarded his first medal in September 1917 and the second in November 1917. The photographs show both heavy and light mortars in action.
