Private John Thomson

Private John Thomson, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died on 8th January 1917 in Baghdad whilst a Prisoner of War of the Turks. He was one of the thirteen men who were wounded and had been captured at Gallipoli after the ” Charge ” on 12th July 1915 which cost the Battalion dearly. He is commemorated on the Angora Memorial, Baghdad ( North Gate ) War Cemetery, Iraq. In his excellent book ” For King Country and the Scottish Borderers ” author Gavin Richardson devotes a chapter to these prisoners and their treatment by the Turks until the survivors return in 1918. Four of these men died whilst in captivity and  were Private W. Martin, Duns, Private H. Turnbull, Earlston,  Sergeant A. Wood, Stow and Private Thompson, Kelso.
