Private John Rutherford

Private John Rutherford, 15th (Service) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed France on 31st May 1917 during the latter stages of the Battle of Arras, aged 37 and is buried in Mindel Trench British Cemetery, St Laurent-Blangy, Arras, France. He was the son of Peter and Isabella Rutherford of Cockburnspath and the husband of Mary Ellen Rutherford of 22 The Square, Kelso. His Headstone is inscribed ” Greater Love Hath No Man Than This”.  Before enlisting in Kelso in February 1915 he had worked as a tailor. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion in France but was wounded in March 1916 and evacuated to the Brook War Hospital, Woolwich, London. On recovery in November 1916 he was posted to the 15th Battalion.
