Private John Hardy

Private John Hardy, 1st Squadron Machine Gun Corps ( Cavalry ) he was killed in action, aged 40, in France on the 23rd March 1918 on the third day of the German March Offensive. He was the son of Thomas Hardy of the Livery Stables, 12 Bowmont Street, Kelso and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France. He had spent 12 years as a Regular soldier with the 5th dragoon guards and had served in the South African War. on the outbreak of War he had re joined his old regiment which eventually morphed on the 28th February 1916 from the machine gun sections of the 2nd and 5th Dragoon guards and the 11th Hussars into the 1st Squadron Machine Gun Section of the Cavalry. The photos show troops in defensive positions in march 1918.
